Nine Years of Community Building
What is the The Art of 「跨」Kua?
The Art of「跨」為這次活動主軸。
As for the art of ‘kuà’, the theme of this event, we look forward to delving deep into the intricacies of the cultural issues that exist in Taiwan, inspiring new ideas and opening up new discussions. To this effect, we’ve invited a number of new-generation thinkers and creatives in the arts and cultural spheres to gather for a salon-style forum on the topics of “cultural experimentation in Taiwan” and “the international nature of culture”. Each speaker in the forum has been engaged in work to further develop ideas related to these topics or comes from a strong background in related fields.

What is the purpose?
About the “KUÀ” event ——
In terms of cultural activity, the notion of ‘kuà’ — to span, extend beyond, overcome, or surpass — is nothing new for the Red Room International Village, where such cultural terrain has been tilled for nine years now. When it comes to experimentation and innovation, the concept of kuà has proved pertinent, be that in the bridging of generation gaps, or collaborations between artists and cultural workers of different fields, or the spanning of ‘East’ and ‘West’ in international exchanges — not to mention the performances in which the fourth wall is hardly in place before it falls. We’ve also seen the idea of ‘kuà’ come to the fore in the various ‘labs’ of cultural creation and experimentation, social innovation, and so forth, where it plays an increasingly prominent role.
Although the Red Room and other similar groups might not be on the same page as researchers in the field of cultural studies, we’ve nevertheless maintained a hands-on approach to culture, and we’ve taken some strong positions, making a difference over the years. Now approaching our 9th anniversary, we wish to re-confirm this commitment: to provide a space where people can gather, have the chance to collaborate, and together create more breathing room in this period of economic constraint, for more inclusivity and for more diversity in Taiwan’s cultural landscape.

哪個才華洋溢的誰又將帶給我們什麼樣的 思想/視覺/生命可能性 轟炸。
Over the past few decades, I have enjoyed crossing-borders, crossing-disciplines and crossing-roles in my life and in my work. As a media professionals, I have worked to bring content from multinational conglomerates such as NBCU, Viacom & A&E to Taiwan, and at the same time developed home-grown media platforms such as #GagaOOlala , Asia’s 1st and the world largest (in terms of titles) LGBT Movies Online Service to other parts of the world. On the personal front, I have gone from a gay bachelor to becoming a proud father of twin boys. “#Kua” is the new norm and we all have the ability and capability to expand and blossom into our own unique ways.
Speaker David Chang｜ Crossroads.TW
Crossroads is an experimental cross-lingual platform that connects global entrepreneurs and talent to services and resources in Taiwan and overseas markets. Powered by the technologies and human experts of the Wordcorp translation platform, Crossroads offers an effective solution for startups and SMEs to reach new markets through the localization, distribution, and analysis of content across integrated media channels.
With a background in U.S. politics, David Chang founded Wordcorp in 2014 and Crossroads in 2018 to address recurring issues with global outreach and internationalization efforts by Taiwan. Observing the passion and goodwill for Taiwan around the world, he realized that language and political barriers to foreign integration served as major hindrances to these efforts. Now, through active engagement with business leaders and government officials, Crossroads is poised to serve as a multilingual nerve center of activity among the local, foreign, and overseas communities of Taiwan.
