World Oceans Day 2019
Saturday, June 8
On World Oceans Day, people around our blue planet celebrate and honor the ocean, which connects us all. Get together with your family, friends, community, and the planet to start creating a better future. Working together, we can and will protect our shared ocean. Join this growing global celebration on 8 June!
WHY CELEBRATE WORLD OCEANS DAY?
A healthy world ocean is critical to our survival. Every year, World Oceans Day provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean. The ocean is important because it:
Generates most of the oxygen we breathe
Helps feed us
Regulates our climate
Cleans the water we drink
Offers a pharmacopoeia of medicines
Provides limitless inspiration!

The Power of One
The Flight of the Hummingbird
The story begins with the Great Forest catching on fire, and the animals within it fleeing for their lives.
The bear shouts, “Fire!”
The crow shouts “Run for your life!”
There was only one who would not flee like all the other animals. Dukdukdiya, the tiny hummingbird flew to the stream, picked up a single drop of water, and dropped it on the raging fire. Again and again she continued her efforts against the raging fire. The other animals watched at a safe distance, warning Dukdukdiya of the danger. They felt there was nothing they could do. But Dukdukdiya continued bringing drops of water to the fire. Finally, the bear, asked her what she was trying to accomplish.
Without stopping her work, Dukdukdiya said, “I am doing what I can.”
The story of the Flight of the Hummingbird is a popular parable.
It was inspired by a fable that was told by the Quechan people of present day Ecuador.
This story has been passed down from generations of indigenous people.
