About the Bard
Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 and died in 1971 in Calcutta, India. In 1901 Tagore established an experimental school in West Bengal at Shantiniketan, Abode of Peace, where he sought to blend the best of Indian and Western traditions.Through his school he was highly influential in introducing Indian culture to the West and Western culture to India. He was a poet, visual artist, playwright, novelist, educationist, social reformer, nationalist, business-manager and composer. His poetry is metaphysical: about a union with the supreme being. The poems also speak of the union of two earthly lovers. This type of anthropomorphic depiction of celestial love is quite common in the literature of India since the 12th century. Tagore created new prose and poetry forms using the colloquial language of Bengal, freeing his writing from the ancient forms based on Sanskrit.
Tagore was awarded a knighthood in 1915, which he repudiated in 1919, in protest of the Amritsar Massacre. From 1912 to the end of his life Tagore spent long periods out of India lecturing and reading from his work in Europe, the Americas and East Asia. He is revered as a spokesperson for the cause of Indian independence.
