楚德拉.圖瑪特Choduraa Tumat
楚德拉.圖瑪特誕生於圖瓦西部的遼闊草原,一個位在蘇聯地區南西伯利亞的共和國。楚德拉自小聽兄長唱呼麥及西奇喉唱,耳濡目染下喜歡上喉音。1998年她成立《圖瓦的女兒》女子喉音團體,並成為該團之藝術領袖。楚德拉為圖瓦的全才型藝術家,精通喉音中的各種技巧如繞富韻致的呼麥、低沉的卡基拉、高繞的西奇哨音、和如騎馬般充滿節律性的馬鐙唱法 、哨音卡基拉,楚德拉自1998年起開始專業演出。除了喉唱以外,她也演唱圖瓦傳統民族音樂,以及演奏樂器 chanzy (三弦),igil(圖瓦馬頭琴),shoor(楚吾爾),khomus(口簧琴),(全部都將在專場音樂會中演奏),同時還有byzaanchy(胡琴)、doshpuluur(三弦琴)、chadagan(箏)。她獲得許多圖瓦的獎項以及榮譽頭銜,受邀到莫斯科和其他俄國城市,以及世界上非常多國家演出。
在布里亞特的東西伯利亞國立學院畢業之後,她在圖瓦國立大學進行有關女性喉唱的畢業後研究,並在該大學以及其他幾間圖瓦首府克孜勒的學校任教。楚德拉在教導國際學生有關喉唱以及傳統音樂方面的經驗受到很高的評價。她成立了第一個女子喉唱團體《圖瓦的女兒》,並且帶團巡迴日本、中國、台灣、美國以及歐洲許多國家。她也錄製了多張CD以及一部DVD,都與《圖瓦的女兒》演出。

碧斯蔚.梓佑Pisui Ciyo

泰雅族人,專業劇場藝術工作者。國立台北藝術大學戲劇系博士班,國立台北藝術大學劇場藝術研究所畢業。從事專業表演藝術活動逾二十年,參與台灣專業表演藝術團體赴國內、外藝術節演出,嫻熟現代劇場藝術、台灣原住民族儀式樂舞及西班牙佛拉明哥傳統樂舞等領域。目前主要研究領域為「儀式與劇場」之論述與實踐,並持續從事現代劇場、原住民族樂舞傳統與創作等跨領域表演藝術創作。
2013年獲得台灣當代藝術大獎第十一屆「台新藝術獎」年度首獎。2012年獲原住民族文化事業基金會第一屆「Purima藝術獎」入圍獎。2011年獲原住民族委員會駐村藝術家進駐部落創作計畫,回歸原住民族口述傳統、儀式樂舞及現代劇場的跨域創作。2008年獲原住民族委員會專業人才出國進修計畫,赴西班牙賽維亞進修。2002年獲得亞洲文化協會(Asian Cultural Council)年度表演藝術類受獎人,赴美國紐約進修現代劇場藝術,並因緣際會開始研習吉普賽家族佛拉明哥傳統樂舞。2003-05每年春天持續赴紐約研習進修,2006-8四度赴西班牙佛拉明哥發源地賽維亞及赫雷斯等地研習,跟隨多位佛拉明哥藝術舞蹈家研習及參與當地演出。

少妮瑤.久分勒分(sauniaw tjuveljevelj)
少妮瑤是排灣族最年輕的口、鼻笛傳承藝師,也是傳承者中的唯一女性。近年來她積極以排灣族的音樂文化傳承為職志,除了出版三張獲得金曲獎提名肯定的民謠,口、鼻笛專輯之外,也採集瀕臨失佚的排灣民謠,編譜、研究、並自編教材出版,致力於口、鼻笛及民謠的傳習、保存與發揚工作。她以女性特有的纖細感性與抒情,將排灣族歌謠以口、鼻笛演奏與人聲吟唱,賦予傳統古調以新的詮釋與創新,
她也擅長演奏並製作原住民樂器,包括口、鼻笛,口琴、弓琴等。同時,少妮瑤也屢屢受邀國際表演,與各國知名音樂家跨界演出,將排灣族獨特的傳統鼻笛樂音傳到日本全島、澳洲雪梨、.北歐愛沙尼亞、美國加州、堪薩斯州、新加坡、所羅門群島、馬來西亞、香港,北非摩洛哥、菲律賓等地。

Ivan Alberto
Ivan Alberto 出生在墨西哥市,Ivan學習當代打擊樂,但他的主要影響是在傳統音樂方面,特別是印尼以及墨西哥音樂。他也在峇里島以及爪哇學習傳統甘美朗(gamelan,印尼的打擊樂器),偶戲(puppetry)以及樂器製作,目前在台灣居住,並在劇院工作。

馬克.范.湯可鄰Mark van Tongeren
馬克.范.湯可鄰是一位人聲/聲音探險家,在萊頓大學取得創意表演藝術的博士學位。在他的藝術工作中,他強調音樂的表演性及戲劇性,並和視覺藝術家、作曲家以及舞者合作演出。身為一個即興演出者,他也與大提琴家馬友友共同演出巴哈組曲,並參與俄國作曲家Dmitri Shoshtakovich的世界首演紀錄片,並在台灣舞蹈表演,如驫舞劇場、葉名樺以及光環舞集共同演出。

Bio:

Mark van Tongeren is a sound explorer, experimental vocalist and cultural musicologist, well-known for his work on Tuvan throat singing and other kinds of overtone singing around the world. He wrote a textbook Overtone Singing (2004) and presented his work internationally from the USA and New Zealand to Taiwan. In 2013 he received his PhD from Leiden University with his thesis ‘Thresholds of the Audible. About the Polyphony of the Body’. Mark is a member of the arts/sound-collective Oorbeek and founded Parafonia and Superstringtrio. He lives in Taiwan with his Taiwanese wife Wen Yo-June and their two children.

Performance statement: For this Red Room I have prepared a sound massage, to clean the audience’ ears, brains and cells. Simple, flowing vocal sounds (though with a twist …. ) that can swallow up all the confused energy in your body-mind. Close your eyes, open your ears, and experience soundspace the way you have never experienced it before. Forget what you were doing, what troubled you, forget even who you are and where you are. Enjoy some moments of pure silence, of simple being afterwards. And come out refreshed.

Bio:

Coming from Indianapolis, U.SA.

Apelles Johnson is a poet of simplicity. His poems vary in subject matter and mood, but he tries to maintain a style of speaking clearly and giving a message easily understood.

He is proud to have performed in Taipei as it shows an appreciation for his style of universal poetry. He has also hosted a poetry workshop here through the organization ‘Becoming’ as well as written and performed short plays with the Taipei Players. He loves listening to live music and works as an English teacher at Tamkang High School.

Bio:

David Gentile came to Taiwan years ago to study Chinese and Kung Fu, then ended up graduating from the Chinese Dept. at NTNU this past Summer. He traveled throughout the US before coming to Taiwan, and has always enjoyed coming up with little one-two line rhymes about the strange, beautiful, or troubling people, places, and things he encountered along the way.

“The poems started to become a way for me to impermanently document my experiences and even influenced the way I saw the world. Places became references to epic lines with names like “The Dog-Rocket House” or “The Dust Palace” that echoed the feeling of the abandoned hotel in the Lost Boys. People around me started to have nicknames so colorful and fitting that they sounded like the cast of Dick Tracy villains, and even the simplest of tasks were a mix between everyone’s own unique dog commands and rhyming slang. Basically, we got in there like swimwear, and now I have a whole new time zone…”

Like most artists, in younger days Tina was a Taiwanese hippy, rebelling against anything that interfered with her free will. She loved playing the guitar and learned American music while participating in all the social movements when Taiwan was seeking its identity in the early 80s.

After 30 years, she knows that the voice and sound must come from her own ground and soil now.

Having explored different art forms, she has finally chosen telling Taiwanese stories through songs from the ancient Chinese to current days, and to follow her bliss…

She likes to see herself as someone who uses this ancient musical instrument – moon guitar, to share shamanic spirits from nature and folklore of the mother earth. The instrument is two stringed, but says a lot in a simple ways, as most of life’s wisdom does.

“The Power and Purpose of Art”
      藝術人文的力量和用途
A few weeks ago, on the Internet site called Reddit, there was a post of a young man sharing his pain. The pain was of loss. The young man, 24 years old, agreed to watching his neighbor’s daughter while they went through a divorce, he fixed his car in the garage and she sat with him, eventually curious and brave enough to ask him if she could help. The two developed a bond over the weeks to come only to be separated by an imminent divorce and move.
His pain, when shared, opened up a sensational trend of responses. People connected and created from his and her pain. His loss of a friend, the young girl’s loss the only respectful adult who cared for her. Some of the most powerful responses were acts of artistry, and creation. Using their story to create poems, songs, and beautiful verse reposes, they helped mend him, all with the desire and goal to help him find a way through his loss.
So what is art for, and why do we have it? Where does it come from? How has the creative energy transformed today into our world of living with technology? Do we still use art for the same reasons?
Through the examination of poetry, verse, theatrics, music, and this example, I will try to address the humanness to create and give, and examine where the true resting place for a final piece of artistry should be.
幾個星期前在一個叫 Reddit 的網站上一 24 歲的研究所畢業生留了一篇散文,他在這篇文章裡面敘述了他的親生經歷。他有一對鄰居是兩個快要離婚的夫婦,而他們在這個又煩又忙的過程中沒有足夠的時間照顧他們的 8 歲女兒。小女孩的父母親其實只顧著他們自己的需求,也不把他們女兒的成長過程放在眼裡。反而,是這位在一邊修他的汽車,一邊看管他們的小孩的「臨時保姆」才真正的當上了一個盡責的家長。可是小女孩的父母離婚不久之後,她的母親決定要遷居,女兒也一定是被牽著走,而這對投錯胎的「真父女」也就拆離了。
他發佈他的苦衷之後,網友們的回應都是非常的熱烈,而且多半以詩文、抒情的散文,以及音樂的形式回應。他們都以他們兩人的故事當靈感之後用藝術人文的管道來幫他渡過這個難關。
那麼,什麼是藝術人文到底是什麼?它為什麼存在?它從哪裏來?今天的藝術人文用途是否和過去相同?在我們生活科技過度發達的時代我們又要如何把這創造性的能量發揮到最大的境界?
通過詩歌,白話,戲劇,音樂,以及這個故事作為例子,我會討論我們為人的創造和給予能力,並且尋找藝術與人文的真正的目的地。

Bio:
I’ve been involved in the performing arts in a wide variety of ways since early childhood. Since coming to Taipei five years ago, I find myself in an entirely new-to-me sub-genre: Radio Drama and it might never have occurred to me if not for my involvement with the Red Room Community. The experience has been transformative. I’m Director/Producer of a fledgling company: Red Room Radio Redux (R4). Our mission is to share great classic Western literature with a wide audience using simple techniques of readers’ theater and radio drama. In our productions, we seek to re-kindle an appreciation for Western literary tradition and to find common purpose through a shared, re-imagined experience of these great works.
A not-for-profit organization, R4 is always grateful for support in any form: technical assistance online and onstage, opportunities to perform, gifts in kind and, of course, sponsorship. We seek to connect with educational institutions in Taipei; we want to share our passion for the spoken word and do our part for education. Bio
Thomas Bellmore has been a valuable player with R4 starting with his portrayal of Jonathan Harker in Dracula LIVE! Halloween 2013. He recorded the same role for broadcast on ICRT-FM100 this year (10/30 at a time TBA)
Last December, he played Marley’s Ghost for our annual presentations of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and, in a special command performance, took the challenge to portray 8 different characters before a live audience.
We are grateful to him for his time and talent.

Bio: 生於1982/10/01,向姵寧是我的本名,但因我姊姊的乳名叫圓圓,所以我被取名叫團團,大家都這麼叫我。我畢業於台灣藝術大學電影學系,曾做過獨立製片電影的造型與梳,,最久的工作經歷在一家服裝造型概念店 – 一家幫客人做整體造型及銷售的店,目前嘗試做一個專職的插畫設計師也會為此做為終生的職業。目前經歷過2次插畫個展,2次插畫聯展。而近期的規劃是去英國深造。

Performance theme: 在2011年9月辭掉了我5年以上的工作,完全離開了舒適圈,走進了我完全不瞭解的產業 – 插畫。從2002年來就不斷創作插畫的我,只是為了一種發洩與釋放,但越來越發現在其他工作上找不到像在畫插畫裡那樣的心跳感。服裝造型與銷售的工作也喜歡並且漸漸成為我的專業,但在心中沒有悸動,我不希望自己變成一個無感,不冷不熱的人,我的心中需要一把火,需要熱情的火在我的生活中。我將分享2002~2012的插畫作品,及在創作上的心得!以及未來我期待自己創作的主題。

l   Charis Chua

Bio: Charis Chua had an early start, exploring her artistic talents through the piano, violin and dance. She performed with string ensembles, youth orchestras and also attained an ATCL diploma in Piano from the Trinity College of London at 15. After high school, she majored in jazz piano, and contemporary voice at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in Australia. During her time there, she played keyboards for jazz-funk band ‘Dancing about Architecture’and Latin Music bands; released two collaborative albums; and was the musical director, keyboard player, and co-arranger for Macbeth, the Contemporary Rock Opera. In 2009, Charis released “Illogical”, an EP containing a collection of original songs.Charis is now based in Taiwan as a regular arranger and performer on the GOOD TV Broadcasting Corporation, the first Chinese Christian TV network in the world. Her versatility also allows her to arrange for and perform with pop artistes, like Samuel Tai, Chen –Yue Chang, and Nicky Lee; or to be musical director of classical crossover concerts held by the Opera Society of Taiwan. She is also actively working towards her first Mandarin album release in the Asian market.

l   Lawrence Philbrook

Bio: Lawrence Philbrook (費樂理) CPF, CToPF

Lawrence Philbrook has been designing processes for teams and leaders in varied cultural settings for over  forty years. Lawrence joined the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) in 1972 and has worked outside the US since 1977 doing extensive company and community-based projects in over 20 nations. For the past 22 years he has been the director of ICA Taiwan while working across Asia.

After leaving the US, his first ten years focused on initiating effective development partnerships with rural communities in Africa and Asia. Beginning in 1985 Mr. Philbrook added facilitating private sector groups developing leadership and ongoing organizational change.

His key skill is in design and facilitation of processes which recover a sense of respect and trust as a basis for establishing organizations that can learn and change.  His clients have included communities, government organizations, the United Nations and more than 50 multinational organizations as well as local companies.

Performance theme: My topic is going to be “Building Community”.  I will tell stories from my work in communities around the world and in organizations, including the past 20 years in Greater China and Taiwan.  Finally I will focus on how each of us has opportunities like the Red Room to create communities in the moment. Once we open the door to that connection it represents possibility the possibility of respect, the possibility of authentic connection, and the possibility of service beyond ones’ self.

l  Jean-Loup Fayolle

Bio: Jean-Loup Fayolle came to Taiwan for the first time in October 2011 to support the Taiwanese companies leading the world towards an ethical behavior in business. He has founded “Wholistic Communication” in January 2012 in Taipei. Since 25 years, his calling and passion are to learn about communicating with the five senses, listening to voices and developing the EQ (Emotional Quotient). Jason Hsu is an educator, design thinker, storyteller and most of all a learner of Nature.Started off as a journalist for Taiwan News, Jason developed a curious mind of humanity.HIs desire to explore brought me to travel across Central and South America in search of a Che-Guevara like revolution. He spent time in Xian China helping investigate and research water resource consumption under UNESCO. In 2008 he co-founded The Big Question  Conference as a way to facilitate, build conversation and network among the youth in Asia.

What began as a conference turns into a social innovation hub that draws a variety of talents in creative, entrepreneurial minds to collaborate together. He also co-founded TEDxTaipei in 2009 and has been serving as TEDx Ambassador since 2010.

His recent endeavor involves building a new type of school that fosters peer-to-peer, project-based learning and online social learning. The new school “Starters School” is built upon the theory of beehive and mutualism. He is also starting up a collaborative coworking space in Taipei called Good Lab.

Jason is a runner and an avid lover of mountain climbing. Jason receives B.A in English Literature from National Chengchi University and is selected as one of the 35 participants to enroll in Amsterdam School of Creative Leadership (www.thnk.org)

Performance theme: My topic would be “Colouring people’s life, and mine”; talking about who I am; why I decided to start The Escape Artist; what I encountered and learned during the journey.

l  Mauro Sacchi

Bio: Born in Italy, mis-educated in the US, and now calling Taiwan home, Mauro is an artisan and artist, working in dance and theater. He has shared his work internationally in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Italy, USA, Guatemala, South Africa, working independently and with HORSE Dance Theater 驫舞劇場. Among many projects, he is currently crafting a new show, home.coming, while completing his Master’s thesis in Dance and Performance Studies at the Taipei National University of the Arts北台北藝術大學. He is in awe at many things, the human body, movement, contact, and food chief amongst them.

He sits on the Advisory Board for the US-branch of the NGO EMERGENCY (Life Support for Civilian War Victims). He wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for his family (in Italy, in the US, in Taipei, everywhere) and his many teachers and mentors.

This will be about me, about us, about what moves me, about what moves you, about depression about laughter about a smile about contact about distance about what it means to make peace about why we need to about that one time when I got shot about discovering that I am ok about that so are you about stillness about movement about ACTions about in-tention which is in-tension about art about silliness about do you remember when it was all much easier about the need for rules and limitations in order to find freedom about complementary opposites about the art of living the art of giving about cause about effect about landmines about human rights about my teachers about gratitude about being smug about being humble about something which I am probably forgetting about something unnecessary about bumblebees about punctuation. About precision, about bad habits, about changing them, about paying attention.

rrweb-marktBio: Mark van Tongeren is a sound explorer, experimental vocalist and cultural musicologist, well-known for his work on Tuvan throat singing and other kinds of overtone singing around the world. He wrote a textbook Overtone Singing (2004) and presented his work internationally from the USA and New Zealand to Taiwan. In 2013 he received his PhD from Leiden University with his thesis ‘Thresholds of the Audible. About the Polyphony of the Body’. Mark is a member of the arts/sound-collective Oorbeek and founded Parafonia and Superstringtrio. He lives in Taiwan with his Taiwanese wife Wen Yo-June and their two children.

Performance theme: The philosopher, Avishai Margalit, once asked if there is an ethics of memory. Do we have obligations to remember people or events from the past? Is there a duty of remembrance?  Marc Anthony, in his work-in-progress novel entitled “38 Geary”, explores these questions as a middle-aged, diffident high school history teacher, Paul Dunowicz, is charged by his dying childhood friend to spread his ashes into the Pacific Ocean.  The reluctant Dunowicz travels with the ashes from his East Bay home and crosses the city of San Francisco with them on the 38 Geary bus line, which transects the entire city from bay to the ocean.  Dunowicz’ bus ride ends up being an odyssey into ever-deepening levels of memory, as he remembers people and events not only of his own past, but those of long-forgotten San Franciscans who seem to call out to him for remembrance.

Bio: Marina Shifrin is a Russian-born, Chicago-raised, Missouri-educated writer from New York. She splits her time between performing stories her parents would disapprove of and being lost – which explains why she is currently in Taiwan.

I have nothing to say, and I am saying it.
John Cage

This is one of many famous aphorisms of John Cage the composer, whom many of you know, I guess. I liked what Ping said in his introduction about listening, a theme that I am deeply involved with personally. My presentation here comes just days before the submission of my PhD at Leiden University, that is, after having a great deal of things to say, instead of nothing. A tiny part of many thoughts and ideas that I soaked up and produced now covers some 270 pages of text, which will bear the title Thresholds of Audibility. It as an artistic research at the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts of Leiden University and a live performance will form an integral part of the PhD, together with the text. And despite all those words I feel a great deal of kinship with Cage’s approach to silence and listening. Half an hour before Red Room I tried to reduce those many pages to some key phrases, which I will now read to you. (I interspersed every phrase with different forms of vocal improvisations rendered here as […].)

I really like to think of a human being as something that exists on a threshold.
[…]
My words, thinking, exist on a threshold with your words, thinking, and everyone else’s.
[…]
It is never just ‘me’ talking, thinking … something talks and sings with me (and with you too).
[…]
Every word is an empty gesture, a grasping of reality, a way out of nothingness.
[…]
Behind our words is fantastic realm where ‘everything’ is possible and yet ‘nothing’ exists.
Bold, empty, glorious numbers.
[…]
This is the polyphony of the body.

I would like to conclude with a poem that ‘visited me’ when I was flying above the South-China Sea, in november 2010. I returned from East-Jeruzalem where I had performed with an amazing, young Sufi-reciter, a  muezzin, Firaz Gazzaz. It was a very impressive project and journey to a place that is laden with dualities. I have dedicated the poem to my great teacher, the German artist Michael Vetter, whom Ping also heard here in Taipei and whom I hope can return to Taiwan to share his creative genius.

Flying through the sky,
I am everwyhere.
Yet no man can fly.

Humanity gives me wings.
Am I a whole.
Am I a part.

Humanity surrounds this being
that freely roams the sky.

It is the nothing
within,
the almighty, beautiful silence
and silence resounding
that seeks me.
