The gong is a sacred threshold. It is a portal that links the finite and the infinite experience of the self. Whenever our intention is to cross that portal, we must consciously link to the chain of being.

The Golden Link should be established before playing the first note of the gong.

The Gong’s teachings feed our higher mind with a spiritual knowledge that helps us to revive our awareness and develop our intuition and power of synthesis, connecting with the heart. It is the path to mastery in the use of sound as a tool of transformation and wellbeing in the way to service the humanity!

The Gong Master Training is aimed at all professionals and advanced sound therapists, or student of yoga, or the musician, but also for those who simply wish to be introduced in the power of self-realization and healing with the gong.

This training is designed to also receive the intermediate and advanced students of Gong, so that they may develop their skills to teach students and thereby converting it into teachers of teachers.

Day 1 – 4
GONG – History, types of gongs, techniques for playing, hand techniques, maintenance, accessories (mallets, stands, bags), Preparation and execution of Gong Baths and Concert, Play
the gong for meditation and in the yoga classes.

Day 5
VOICE – Freeing the voice, overtone singing, singing with shruti box, mantras.

Think In & Out of the Box
Everyone tells us to “Think out of the box!” But no one tells you what the box is. Come and learn about The Box, and how to think out of it.

In this powerful workshop participants will receive a specially designed physical box that represents the invisible box that limits their creativity. Through a number of interactive and reflective exercises, they will identify the boundaries to their thinking, appreciate the positive function of “the box,” and learn simple techniques for thinking both in and out of the box.

Agenda
1. What is “The Box” we are supposed to think out of? What is the origin of the phrase “Think out of the box,” and what does “the box” represent exactly?
2. Brand the Outside of The Box – The outside of “The Box” represents our public thinking. Participants personalize the outside to reflect the thinking that they make public.
3. Make the Inside of “The Box” Meaningful – Each of the four faces inside the box represent a different boundary to our thinking. By identifying what those boundaries we are, we can then know when we are thinking beyond the box, and when we are still inside the box.
4. Experience “In the Box Thinking” Participants complete tasks with the box on and off their head to clearly identify the difference between in the box and out of the box thinking.
5. Identify Key Learnings What are we learning about the invisible box that limits our thinking through this process? What tools and processes can we use to think more effectively both in and out of the box?

All’s Well will be hosting Dinner and a Show on December 12th and a matinee on the 13th.
Dinner and a Show will include one hour for eating and mingling, with two hours of performances, including a fifteen minute intermission. Our seven plays are completely original works written by members of our community. Some shows feature bilingual performances (Chinese and English), and most take on a serious tone as they aim to stimulate thought on current social events.

Drew’s Drama Sessions are back!

This Sunday we had our welcome-back-class. It mostly consisted of games and exercises in ideas and themes we had covered before the long break, which included Charades (of animals), and telephone. Afterwards we did exercises in the the 8 effort actions. Followed by an introduction to the Hieratic gestures (gestures that have dual meanings, and are used across cultures and time periods), as well as exercising using different centers of movement and motivation (moving with the heart full or empty, moving with strong or weak bones, etc.).
For the next class we will begin to delve deeper into the Hieratic gestures, as well as continuing a review of previous lessons.
As I have mentioned to some of the parents this past Sunday, we will be working under R4 in an afternoon performance with our own performance of Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham, and Cat in the Hat. This means that we will also begin to incorporate text into the lessons, and begin learning about interpretation and performance of text.

Drew’s Drama Session, October 2013

It’s about 11:30 in the morning as Drew guides a group of kids through a imaginary swamp in the Learning Kitchen. He gradually picks up his feet off the oriental carpet and deliberately lands them slowly and carefully, as if afraid to ruin the elaborate patterns on the delicate Indian rug. What is amazing is that the kids are shadowing his lead; most of them seem so curiously amused that they can’t help but shriek with excitement. Max, a second grader who entered behaving shy and meek during introduction, now has become equally hyper as Kyle, also a second grader who occupied his sense of imagination by throwing mud at the young thespians from the carpet swamp. It is hard to imagine just an hour earlier, every kid as languid and exhausted.

“Shh… we have to be very quiet! There’s a sniper here! It’s nighttime and there are a lot of branches here in the swamp…” Drew vigilantly whispers to everyone. Conrad, one of the participants in the group, quiets down for a few seconds before he makes gunshot noises and falls down on the swampy ground. This cautious whisper from Drew was intended to calm the kids down, but rather managed to open another gateway to their imagination. Soon the kids are pretending to shoot each other.

“No, no, no… I am not going to allow people getting shot in this class! And no shooting at other people either!” Andrew says, and I can’t help but giggle.

Drew’s Drama Session is all about thinking about the small things in life and expressing them through movement and language. In one of the many exercises, Drew gets the children to think back on times when they were tired and hungry and act out these feelings purely through movement. As for language, Drew asks them to express movements such as a “dab” or a “slash” with the tone of their voice. Through these exercises, Drew hopes to have the kids understand that drama and acting is all about movement, language, and stretching one’s imagination as far as possible. A lot of times, the kids look like they are playing, but it is one of Drew’s subtle methods in getting everybody comfortable with expressing themselves. When everyone is up and alive, there is no time to think about being shy and timid!

This is Drew’s first of four drama sessions that are being held every other Sunday from 10:30am to 12:30pm at the Learning Kitchen, and everybody seemed to have enjoyed themselves—especially Drew. Considering how much everyone enjoyed themselves, there might be a possibility that the Red Room will offer more classes for kids from seven to fourteen years. And if anyone is interested, we are more than happy to open classes for fourteen and above!

Volunteer & Internship Opportunities at the Red Room

rr-972x420-10The Red Room is an ever-expanding community, exploring and extending the boundaries between audience and performer; a not-for-profit platform for events developing a culture of learning to listen to each other, what is around us, and our selves.

We at the Red Room are always on the lookout for motivated and energetic volunteers. As a multi-arts organization, the Red Room offers opportunities for volunteers to gain experience in non-profit management and to help support a range of outstanding events.

Those who are interested in short-term volunteer opportunities at the Red Room should email red.room.taipei@gmail.com or call 0910 947 307 to inquire about ushering at certain events; helping to promote the Red Room’s events via emails, calls and flier/postcard distribution; cleaning and setting parts of the Red Room space; and other individual projects that arise from month to month.

Red Room also offers ongoing internships for college or graduate students and early- or mid-career professionals who are interested in gaining arts management experience.

Internships are part-time and unpaid; they typically last for the equivalent of an academic quarter or semester. Interns have the opportunity to work in an informal but extremely active administrative environment, and to witness an array of performances, rehearsals and workshops at the Red Room.

We seek interns in the following categories:

Assistant to Event Coordinator Intern:
Interns will assist with management tasks, including helping the event coordinator with Red Room activities. Responsibilities may include helping book events, scout artists, maintain and update the event calendar, reviewing and editing documents, correspondence and promotional text, special events tasks, and administrative duties such as database management, maintaining files and archiving. Previous experiences working with programming, event planning and/or artist management preferred but not required. Interns will be expected to work about 10 hours per week.

Publicity/Outreach Intern:

This intern works with the team to prepare and disseminate periodic press releases and listings e-blasts for Red Room events; helps field press requests and arrange press events as needed. The Publicity/Outreach intern should have excellent writing and communication skills. Interns will be expected to work about 10 hours per week.

Media and Website Intern
The media and website internship is ideal for individuals with relevant coursework in photography, videography, web development or web based graphic design. Both on-site and off-site internship opportunities are available. Responsibilities may include event photography, videography, web site maintenance and programming (this includes but is not limited to making ongoing revisions and uploading content to Red Room webpages, assisting in Red Room webpage redesigns, developing new webpages, assisting with other design and web projects as needed). Travel to event sites in Taipei may be necessary. Previous experience working with photo, video editing software, knowledge in html, experience using web and media analytics, experience using Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign preferred but not required. Interns will be expected to work about 10 hours per week.

Freedom to Write Intern

This internship is for individuals interested in writing about Red Room events in Chinese and/or English. Applicants should be interested in writing and editing and be eager to develop synopsis of Red Room events. Responsibilities include listening to Red Room Radio Redux shows and writing up appealing summaries which people can read on the Red Room website and e-news blasts. Candidates should have an interest in the performing arts, a flair for writing, and a facility with the English and/or Chinese language. Interns will be expected to work about 10 hours per week.

About Red Room Internships
Internships will be based at the Red Room unless otherwise specified. Internships are unpaid. Red Room will work with interns to comply with the requirements of internship-for-credit program at their institution.

Objectives
Interns will learn first-hand how a non-profit organization, as well as be exposed to various events within the Taipei community and have various networking opportunities with attendance members and performers. Interns will gain skills in non-profit management, event planning and public speaking. In addition to receiving experience and garnering recommendations from Red Room co-founders and/or event coordinators, interns have free admission to all Red Room events.

General qualifications
Candidates must be able to assume significant responsibility and work independently. Excellent communication and organization skills are required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs required. Interest or experience in NGO or non-profit organization/management and event planning preferred but not required. Graduate students preferred but qualified undergraduates are welcome to apply. Database, Web/graphic design and foreign language skills (especially Chinese) preferred but not required.

The Red Room is offering 10 lucky people the chance to develop their songwriting  over the course of 3 workshops with internationally acclaimed writer/music producer Arik Blum and professional vocal coach Ayesha Mehta.

All participants will walk away with invaluable tools help them unlock their inner songwriter as well as an original track with their own voice and their own words.
