Red Room’s 5th year anniversary

The anniversary of our 5th year of red room kicked off with Stage Time and Juice for the kids. We welcomed parents and young ones alike to perform skits, stories, and puppet shows. Some had rehearsed to the point of perfection, while others visibly overcame their stage fright in order to share stories with us. Further into the afternoon, the stage was filled with music while guests enjoyed refreshments provided by Red Room’s sponsors for food and drink.

Deeper into the evening, with the stage cleared of bands and music, we welcomed people of all ages to share whatever they pleased, in the spirit of Red Room’s Stage Time and Wine. There were singers, dancers, a juggler, and even our very own Taipei Improv troupe!

With time to mingle, share, and listen, a socially and creatively fulfilling Saturday was had by all. We hope you can join us for Stage Time and Wine on the 3rd Saturday of each month. We look forward to seeing you there!

Happy Birthday!

“Happy birthday” to the always wonderful, unrelentingly passionate Red Room. Throughout the years, RR has provided us with a platform for self expression and for sharing in the creative arts – be it performance, visual, musical, spoken, etc. But most importantly, it has provided a safe space full of acceptance, warmth, and encouragement for people that wish to share, grow, and connect.

For some of us, it really is like coming home when we attend the monthly Stage Time & Wine/Juice. We get to see our old friends as well as make new ones, and find inspiration through shared stories and experiences. This day was a remembrance of the triumphant five years we’ve shared together, and a celebration of the wonderful times the future of RR is sure to hold.

Here’s to you, Red Room. Happy, happy birthday.

Soaking In, December 2014

My first exposure with Red Room was at the 5th anniversary event. I had been waiting to get involved in theatre, storytelling and performance for the last four years of living in Taiwan, and I’m so psyched to join in! I adore my new community of friends and I can’t wait to be involved more over the years, especially in R4 and Stage Time & Wine.

I took away a lot with me after the 5th Anniversary. I feel like I found my voice again, in a community where I feel I truly belong. I feel like I’m getting back a piece of myself that has been put away on the shelf for a while because of motherhood, work, and marriage. Now it’s time to get reacquainted with the storyteller/actress/writer that I am. I feel like I can get back to my calling of sharing stories and voices with the world.

However the most important treasure I took away with me actually didn’t belong to me. It belonged to my young son Preston. I watched him absorb his surroundings in his own unique way. I watched him choose to enjoy the performances he liked at Stage Time Juice, and choose to ignore what he wished. I watched him make new friends and share his toys. And when he reached out his little hand to take my camera and start taking pictures of his own, I realized more than ever that art and voices belong to everyone, and everyone responds to it in their own way. In his own way, Preston was soaking it in.

Stage Time & Wine 60
One of the best ST&Ws I’ve attended in the past 2 years. Everything came together beautifully, and it really was the people that made it so wonderful. Thanks so much to our old friends (great to see your faces) and newly made friends; we really created something special that night. The performances were so fun and exciting, and the audience-performer interaction was on FIRE. Way too many people stayed for HOURS after ST&W ended, because everyone was so excited on their new friends and nobody wanted to leave. That, to me, is a testament to how beautiful what we create at Red Room is.

Playing for Change @ the Red Room

Joining the global movement for Playing for Change, this September the Red Room Played for Change, encouraging members and participants of both the Stage Time & Juice and Stage Time & Wine events to celebrate the love for music. The day was filled with dynamic mic holders, crackling guitarists and booming vocalists.

Stage Time & Wine was revisited with Andrew Quirks who played a few rock songs to juice the crowd, the soulful Arman Torus serenaded the room into an encore, sharing 3 songs. Daniel Black returned with more ink-heavy verses in the name of summer love. A new Red Room’er Coco sang with two groups of friends sharing pop chart favourites.

To shed light on an upcoming Mexican exhibition here in Taipei, Sergio has shared the details. (view below).

Many more new faces and hearty participants took the stage to express their love for music. We thank PFC for their encouragement, and for allowing us to participate from our corner of the world.

‘red room, all grown-up’…Apelles Johnson

Aside was a new experience to me. I feel as though I am a regular red roomer, but aside felt different. Before the show started, one woman described Aside as “red room, all grown-up”. I wrestled with this definition for some time. I hated the idea of Aside being the “high end” red room, or the red room for “us”. This mentality was what I had searched a long time to escape, and I found an escape from this in Red Room’s personability. I didn’t like the idea of it being a separate event where only the high-end people were invited.

But then the shows started. And Red Room did not let me down.

Aside soon showed itself to be a space where people were pushed to engage yet it was not the engagement of the usual stage time and wine. Manav was insistent on people speaking with the performers, and some of the more regular red-roomers egged the questions along. It then becomes a marvelous space for people to feel comfortable with “performers” and humanized us in a way that breaks down the barriers between the stage and the audience. It allowed me to be seen as a poet and then offered an opportunity to talk with a poet. And a black poet no less. If stage time and wine is like high school, then Aside is like college. Its a place where you are in the room with a professional and allowed to learn from their experiences as you build your own future. This, I discovered, is what was meant by the saying “red room, all grown-up.”

Stage Time and Juice, July 2014

As Roma Mehta, one of the volunteers at Stage Time and Wine oh so many years ago told me, each Red Room event is organic, and has its own chemistry, which depends on the composition of the participants. Our July Stage Time and Juice: Midsummer Magic turned out to be a charming, laid-back affair.

Jennifer Chau emceed this time, her second time, because as she explained to me: “this is my year for pushing boundaries.” She did a fabulous and seamless job, despite having come down with a cold that morning.

The show opened up with young Ciara, who loves to sing and is not at all afraid to get up in front of the microphone. Trevor then led the group in a few call and response songs he learned in boy scouts, to get things rolling. Next up was Tina Ma, whom we see often at Aside events. She told me a while ago that she has always had a desire to work with children, and this is the first time she has attended and performed at one of our Stage Time and Juice events. Accompanied by her classical stringed instrument, Tina introduced some lines in ancient Taiwanese and invited the audience to sing them along with her. She was a little worried that her performance was a bit too esoteric for the children, but as it turns out, our little Red Roomers pretty much catch whatever you throw their way!

Throughout the afternoon, many other treats unfolded, and I am not just referring to the drinks, snacks, and cakes of our potluck buffet! Kyle Hsieh, one of our regular performers, brought two of his new friends, Sean and Steven, who sing Broadway tunes for their theater company. These two young men serenaded the crowd, and Jennifer Chau apparently fell head over heels in crush with them.

Kyle was not the only one who brought along a friend: Arsene, who has appeared at Juice in a previous incarnation as The Dream Magician, put on a warm and humorous show with his companion, using rings, coins, and newspapers. His friend seemed to be an earnest and incompetent student of his, which caused Arsene to shake his head in despair, but of course the joke was on us!

Apart from that, Hannah sang a song, accompanied by her father who played the guitar. Hannah and Kyle had the audience guess some extremely challenging riddles, and handed out prizes. Julian sang a comical “Dramatic Song”, Kyle sang a David Bowie song, and the show closed with Mimi the Puppet who apparently had sneaked out of the house in violation of her curfew to perform for us, explaining why her brother is a wimp and why she bit the teacher’s finger, among other things.

From Trevor Tortomasi
Host, Stage Time & Wine (July 2014)

The first time I attended Red Room’s “Stage Time & Wine”, if someone had told me I would be hosting it someday, I wouldn’t have believed them – but it’s been two years since my first time attending, and the people I’ve met through this community have helped me grow in ways I couldn’t have imagined. On my first night two years ago, I wondered how I could become a poet or a storyteller. Two years later, I often find myself thinking about how to become a better poet and storyteller than I already am.

To be honest, I’m still getting used to it. My personality isn’t as naturally calm and collected as that of our original host – but my goal is to be myself in a way that makes each month’s guests feel welcome and comfortable… because I want people to realize that if I can do it, they can, too.

In R4 news: July 2014

Short Story Project

Back in May, a few of our readers met at the ICRT studio to record voice tracks for a few Great Western Short Stories .
I’ve been listening to those audio files and pairing them with some Great Western Music in preparation for the mixing process which will start in a few weeks..
The folks at ICRT are especially keen on our Sherlock Holmes story: A Scandal in Bohemia. They recommend creating a series and the Holmes/Watson stories of Arthur Conan Doyle could be a good choice.

Incidentally, Pat Woods and Charlie Storrar read our Ignatz Ratzywatzky’s adaptation of the SCANDAL aloud at the Taipei Literature Festival on August 2 at Huashan Park.

Promotional Video Project

Meanwhile, William Openshaw of the RR video-recording division has been working on a video of our WasteLand performed at the April Aside @ The Red Room. He and I will meet in August to take the next step towards a functional promotional video for R4.

The R4 Portfolio

Lastly but not leastly, with a deeply appreciative bow to Roma Mehta: the R4 portfolio has passed the design/development stage and gone to the Printers! Looking forward to putting that item to work making good connections with potential clients.
